The agency stated that if the new rules are finalized, they would help protect consumers from harmful exposure related to asbestos, thereby reducing the risk of diseases such as lung cancer and ovarian cancer. In its proposed rules, the agency will require manufacturers to test samples from each batch of talc-containing cosmetics for asbestos using methods like polarized light and transmission electron microscopy.
