AMS TRANSPORT: Interim Report for the six months ended 30 September 2024
Transport Department: Planning to adjust tolls for Tai Lam Tunnel, diverting nearby roads, and implementing time-based tolls for private vehicles in the future.
During an interview with RTHK, Assistant Commissioner for Transport, Leung Sai Ho, stated that if the current toll levels for the Tai Lam Tunnel are maintained, it is expected that in 2026 there will still be about 15% of the vehicle capacity. Therefore, the authorities hope to adjust the tolls to attract some drivers to use the Tai Lam Tunnel to help disperse traffic from routes such as Tuen Mun Road. Leung also mentioned that many new developments are expected in areas like Northwest New Territories, which will lead to increased traffic flow. Hence, there will be a need to implement off-peak fees for private cars in the future; otherwise, the situation will become unmanageable.
